UC Merced hosts Bobcat Day, an event where admitted and prospective first-year and transfer students, along with their families, can explore the university and discover its academic and student life opportunities. During this event, INSITE partnered with the School of Natural Sciences to set up an informative table. They provided details about the INSITE Undergraduate Summer Research Training Program and showcased animals from each INSITE lab at UC Merced, highlighting ongoing research and undergraduate research opportunities.
INSITE, in collaboration with Equity, Justice, and Inclusive Excellence (EJIE) at UC Merced, cohosted a UC Merced Seminar Series featuring special guest Dr. Tanisha King. Open to graduate students, faculty, staff, and the public, the event included an informative booth hosted by INSITE.
Our INSITE-affiliated Heath-Heckman Lab at MSU participated in the Science Festival by presenting the “Critter Collectors: Fieldwork Exploration Zone.” INSITE graduate student Lacey Bishop-Schouster created a mock-up representing fieldwork practices to introduce children to the various types of organisms and the methods INSITE scientists use to collect them—specifically the organisms studied by INSITE: bobtail squid, aiptasia, and leafhoppers.
College and Career Day at Wakefield Elementary – Continuing our partnership with Wakefield Elementary in Turlock, CA, INSITE graduate students Perla Gonzalez Moreno and Andrea Fusco participated in College and Career Day by sharing both INSITE’s research and their own personal career journeys. The event was presented to the 5th and 6th-grade students at the elementary school.
Continuing its partnership with CSU Stanislaus, INSITE was invited to participate in Science Day at CSU Stanislaus in Turlock, CA. INSITE members provided the community with a hands-on experience that showcased what our field collecting trips are all about! Graduate student Perla Gonzalez Moreno created mock-ups representing the fieldwork involved in collecting each of our study organisms: bobtail squid, aiptasia, and leafhoppers.
INSITE participated in UCM Research Week, hosted by the Office of Research and Economic Development. INSITE graduate students took part in the Poster Showcase, and the outreach coordinator hosted an informative table to share the program’s research and highlight opportunities available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Scorching Questions: Turning up the heat on INSITE faculty - INSITE participated in UCM Research Week, hosted by the Office of Research and Economic Development. As part of the event, INSITE organized a unique panel featuring postgraduate students and faculty. In this session, graduate students turned up the heat—literally! Inspired by the hit show Hot Ones, the event featured INSITE faculty members answering tough (and fun!) student questions while working their way through increasingly spicy chicken wings.
INSITE partnered with Wakefield Elementary School, a local school in Turlock, CA. INSITE graduate student Perla Gonzalez Moreno created a board game, “INSITE Around the World,” to help teach students (4th and 5th grades) about the organisms we study, the locations where we conduct most of our fieldwork, and the potential effects of environmental changes.
The AAUW invited one of our INSITE faculty members, Shilpa Khatri, to share her career journey in Applied Mathematics. INSITE also participated by providing an educational math game developed by one of our graduate students, Morgan Lavenstein Bendall. The game was designed to highlight the program's research and teach students how applied mathematics is used in our work.
The symposium, hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) at UC Merced, showcased undergraduate research from across the university. INSITE undergraduate students participated in the poster presentations, and the outreach coordinator hosted an informative table to share INSITE’s undergraduate research opportunities, including our Undergraduate Summer Research Training Program.
CSU Stanislaus recently hosted an engaging Science in the Community outreach event in collaboration with the Delhi Medical Academy. The event aimed to promote science education and spark students’ interest in STEM by offering hands-on activities to those from the University’s service region. INSITE was proud to contribute by leading an interactive lecture on the Gram stain protocol and showcasing our ongoing research, all facilitated by enthusiastic volunteers from UC Merced’s INSITE labs.

INSITE had the opportunity to participate at the Grandparents University hosted by the MSU Office of Alumni. INSITE delivered two sessions, where graduate student Perla Gonzalez Morenos was able to teach her learning modules to children and their grandparents. The modules included INSITE research, squid dissection, microbial art, and more.
We partnered with UC Merced to provide information to our local community about our university and the program opportunities available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, we offered face painting featuring our organisms and shared information about INSITE.
INSITE partnered with the Gustine Unified School District to host an INSITE Science Day for TK-5th grade students. The event featured two engaging activities: a TK-2nd Grade Matching Game on Human Body Microbes and a 3rd-5th Grade Evolution Game with Bears.

INSITE partnered with the Merced Unified School District for STEAM Nights, participating in an afterschool event at George Kmure Elementary School in Stockton, CA. During the event, INSITE offered a hands-on squid dissection activity and set up an informative table showcasing the ongoing research at INSITE at UC Merced.
The Office of Research at UC Merced hosted the annual Research Week for undergraduate students. During this event, INSITE and RadioBio cohosted a graduate panel titled “Pathways Into Research: Graduate Student Panel.” Additionally, INSITE team members led tours of the Sogin Lab, Nish Lab, and Bennet Lab at UC Merced, providing students and staff with valuable insights into the ongoing research at INSITE.
CSU Stanislaus hosted an exciting community outreach event focused on science education and public engagement as Darwin Day. This event aimed to provide STEM activities to educationally and economically disadvantaged students in the University's service area. INSITE proudly supported this initiative by offering a hands-on squid dissection and an informative table showcasing our ongoing research, with enthusiastic volunteers from all UC Merced INSITE labs.
The CSU Stanislaus Science Day took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Naraghi Hall of Science, CSU Stanislaus Main Campus in Turlock and was free and open to the public. The event featured activities for kids, science shows, open labs and guided tours including the campus planetarium.
